Live My Life: <b>Study Tips</b> (for Additional <b>Mathematics</b>)

Hello! This time, I would like to share some study tips for Additional Mathematics.
As usual, I have something to say before I proceed:
I know everyone has different ways to study Add Maths. I write this post is to share my ways to study add math and I hope my study tips may help those who need it.

Ok, there's a quote for you: Keep calm and learn Add Maths.

I only found this picture. :P Haha...So, keep calm and love add maths. 

Quite many of my friends asked me before: How do you learn additional mathematics? So, I try to write this post. 

Year 2012 - I started my student life as a science student. Have to study AddMaths. When I first study chapter 1 - function, I thought it was not so difficult.  So, for my revision, I just read the notes given, and do homeworks and exercises given by our add maths teacher. (This tips work) I bought exercise book for add maths, but I was quite lazy to do it everyday. So, I did it every week. (This won't really work)In March, we had monthly test. I was not so satisfied with the marks that time.

Day by day, I found that Add Maths is different from mathematics, it is more difficult. I was quite stress that time and always get frustrated when I can't find a solution for a question. But, just don't want to give up. 

 

One day, I asked my addmaths teacher: How to learn addmaths?  The answer is: Do more exercise. I asked my teacher again: What is the simplest way to learn addmaths? The answer is: Do more exercise lor. Well, same answer, I decided to do more exercises for addmath. (This tips really work. That's why when my friends asked me how do I learn addmaths, my answer will always be: DO MORE EXERCISES.) 

So, I tried. Everyday, I took 1 hour to do addmaths exercise. I found that addmaths actually is so interesting and challenging. No matter what, everyday I will do exercise for addmaths at least 30minutes. After that, I found that addmath is not so difficult as what I thought before. For the next exam, I was able to score for my additional mathematics.

Year 2013 - For SPM, I achieved my target for addmath and get the grade that I targeted. 

Ok, that's part of my story, the point is NEVER GIVE UP. 

Come to the study tips: 

- You need to pay attention in class. Listen to what teacher are teaching. 

- You have to finish all the exercises/assignments given by your teacher. Listen to your teacher's advice. 

- You need to have a reference book. I suggest you to buy Pelangi/Oxford one. 

- You need to buy exercise book for additional mathematics and do all the exercises. For suggestion, you should buy exercise book which there are steps for the answer. I used "1201 Bank Soalan Matematik Tambahan"(Pan Asia Publication), Cerdik Publication also not bad (Fly High series if i am not mistaken, during my year lah...) 

- For SPM candidates,  you should do SPM past years questions. Somemore, you should do Koleksi Kertas Percubaan SBP. You should also do all the SPM trial papers, for me, I use Pelangi one. 

- For your timetable, try to get 1 hour or at least 30 minutes for your AddMaths revision. 

- Form a study group. You will not get bored when you study addmath with you friends in the form of study group. You can ask them when you have question and discuss with each other. (This tips really work for me. When I don't know how to solve a question, I will discuss with my friends. And when we got to solve the problem together, we'll feel happy and satisfied.  :D )  

- You should ask teacher when you have problem or you cannot solve a question. You must listen and pay attention when your teacher is teaching about the steps in solving the problem.

- When doing your addmaths homework, you can listen to mp3. Listen to your favourite song or some relaxing music. This can help in reducing stress.

- You need to UNDERSTAND. Learning additional mathematics is not like learning history or reading novel. You need to understand the concepts. It won't work if you memorize. 

- You need to MASTER the formulas.

- Don't just think harder, you need to THINK SMARTER.

- When doing exercises for addmath, remember to write the answer STEP BY STEP. This is important to keep it as habit, so that during exam, you won't skip the step for your solution. 

- Don't be stress when study addmath. 

- Be well prepared for the exam. All the best! ;) 

- Always think positive and believe that you can do it! Never give up! Ok? 

I think these are what I can share. Maybe my study tips are not the best tips and maybe not complete, but hopefully can be helpful. If you don't think the tips are useful/helpful, please go refer to other people study tips especially the PRO one. :)

Every student has had to study mathematics some point in their lives time. Some students love it and some students absolutely hate it. Regardless of what you are studying, it is important to understand the basics of mathematics.

7 tips for solving maths problems

1. We are talking about practice! Maths is not a game!

In order to properly study maths, you must get down and do as many practice problems as you possibly can. The more maths questions you do, the better your understand will be. Each maths problems has its own rules and it is important to know those rules before writing your maths tests and exams. OneClass provides students with practice problems – check it out!

2. Double loop learning – Don't make the same mistakes twice!

Let's face it. When you are solving practice maths problems, you are going to make mistakes. The great thing about making mistakes is that you are able to review these mistakes and learn from them so that you don't make the same errors on your maths tests and exams. Make sure you understand where you went wrong and ingrain that error into your head.

3. Unlock the key concepts

The last thing you want to do when you are studying maths is memorizing the exact processes. It is much more productive if you focus on understand that process and the logic that is associated with the process. Because maths is a sequential subject, it is important to understand the basics. If you are having difficulties solving complex problems, first try solving easier problems that focus more on the basics. You can review key concepts with OneClass Exam Video tutorials.

4. Understand your frustration points

Maths can be extremely frustrating at some points. Some concepts are extremely difficult and can leave yourself questioning "should I just quit?" It is very important to understand your points of frustration. You don't need to master every question. Move on to the next question, or go back to questions that you understand to help re-build your confidence. Absolutely do not give up!

If you find it helps, study with a friend so that you can talk to one another when you get stuck. It is also terrific practice if you are able to explain concepts to another person to help perfect your understanding.

5. Find the perfect study spot

Students need to be able to concentrate wen studying maths. It is crucial for you to find a study area that is a distraction free zone. Music can help when studying, but make sure that it is not distracting you.

Tetris is more fun than math.

The word "mathematics" has been threatening students for centuries. To help prevent common pre-exam symptoms of shock and horror, I've provided you with some CRUCIAL tips which will make your HSC less intimidating and ultimately help you achieve that outstanding test score.

What to expect. The paper will be out of a total of 100 marks, marks that will be harder to get as you progress (so don't get cocky at the beginning and zone out).

Take all the help you can get. There will be a list of Standard Integrals attached to your question booklet, so use it. Attempting to guess them when they are delivered to you is completely idiotic.

What's up for grabs?  The more marks a question is worth, the more love and devotion you should be showing it. If a question is worth more than one mark, you will be required to show your work for it. So show your work for it.

Calculator at the ready. Figure out if it's DEG or RAD you want to use and then make sure your calculator is in the right mode! There's nothing more upsetting than completing an exam and realising that every answer will be wrong because of your failure to press buttons correctly.

Find x

Basic steps. There is no point in doing the work if you're not actually answering the question. Read each question carefully, more than once if necessary. Write down the formula you are using for each question before you dive into equating and calculating willy-nilly.

Don't undo. Don't go wild with the eraser if you think something's wrong – you can still get marks for showing your work if you're demonstrating correct problem solving methods. Leave all your scribbling behind as proof that you do (if only partially) know what you're doing.

Re-check. Once you have completed every question, go back and check each one carefully, making sure you've answered all the components of a question. Use your calculator to re-trace your problem-solving steps and make sure you come up with the same solution. If you don't, you've got a little detective work to do to find out where you strayed from the path of correctness.

Mathematician Hannah Fry shares top three tips for being successful in the search for love

It's time to forget about that high school relationship, because the numbers say that the future is bright.

Hannah Fry, a mathematician and complexity scientist at the University College London's Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis, discussed 'the mathematics of love' during her TEDx talk at Binghamton University.

"I think we can all agree that mathematicians are famously excellent at finding love," Fry joked. "But it's not just because of our dashing personalities, superior conversational skills and excellent pencil cases. It's also because we've actually done an awful lot of work into the maths of how to find our favorite partner."

Fry took the stage to share her love for math and her top three tips for finding love.

Her first tip, "how to win at online dating," covered key steps to creating an OKCupid profile that gets attention. Fry chose OKCupid, she said, because it was created by mathematicians who studied the patterns that people follow when looking for partners.

She said that honesty is important when crafting an online profile.

"It turns out that on online dating websites, how attractive you are does not dictate how popular you are," Fry said. "If you're ugly, it can actually work to your advantage."

To back up her point, Fry gave the example of actresses Portia de Rossi and Sarah Jessica Parker. De Rossi, she explained, is more likely to be considered very attractive by a large amount of people, while Parker is considered "seriously fabulous and possibly one of the most beautiful creatures that has ever walked the face of the earth" by some, and much less attractive by others.

"It's this spread that counts," Fry said. "It's this spread that makes you more popular on an online Internet dating website. If some people think you're attractive, you're actually better off having some people think you're a massive minger. That's much better than everyone just thinking you're just the cute girl next door."

Fry said that though most people try and hide the aspects of their appearance that they feel others might find unappealing, they should actually show them off.

"You should play up whatever it is you think makes you different, even if you think some people will find it unattractive," Fry said. "Because the people who fancy you will just fancy you anyway."

Her second tip went over how a person might know when is the right time to settle down into a meaningful, long-term relationship.

She referenced a study called "Why I don't have a girlfriend" by Peter Backus, where he used the Drake Equation — which is usually used to estimate the number of highly evolved civilizations that might exist in the Milky Way Galaxy — to find how many ideal mates he had in the U.K.

According to Fry, Backus' answer of 26 was about 400 times smaller than the amount of intelligent extraterrestrial life forms there are.

She explained that in order for one to maximize their chances of finding an ideal partner, assuming they are searching from when they turn 15 to when they turn 35, is to reject every partner that shows up during the first 37 percent of that stretch in time, and to settle with the next person that appears who is better than all of his or her predecessors.

This procedure, which is called optimal stopping theory, is apparent in nature, according to Fry.

"In the wild, there are certain types of fish that follow this exact structure," Fry said. "They reject all the fish that come up to them during the first 30 percent of the mating season. Then after that is finished, they accept the next fish that is bigger and burlier than those that had come before."

Fry's last tip for the audience was how to avoid divorce. She referenced work done by John Gottman, a scientist who, by studying dozens of variables in the relationships between couples, was able to predict with 90 percent accuracy whether or not they would get a divorce.

According to Fry, the couples with the healthiest relationships are not the ones who put up with each other the best, but instead are the ones who have the lowest negativity thresholds, meaning that they are most willing to be vocal with one another about what is bothering them.

"These are the couples that don't let anything go unnoticed and allow each other some room to complain," Fry explained. "These are the couples that continually try to repair their own relationship and have a much more positive outlook on their marriage."

Fry ended her talk with a few hopeful words for the audience.

"I hope that for a few of you, a little bit of insight into the mathematics of love can persuade you to have a little bit more love for mathematics," Fry said.

Pipe Dream sat down with Hannah Fry to discuss her work

Pipe Dream: Binghamton University is a long way from London. How did you end up giving a talk all the way in upstate New York?

Hannah Fry: I have a policy where I don't like saying no to any opportunities. I actually received an e-mail a few months back, and I thought it was for a TED event in Birmingham. If you don't know, Birmingham is a little shithole in England, like three hours out of the way. And I really didn't want to go there. But, luckily, a few weeks later, I looked again and I realized that it was actually Binghamton in New York, and I got very excited. When someone offers to fly you out to New York to give a talk about mathematics, you can't turn it down.

PD: How do you feel when you make trips to the U.S. and you hear people calling it 'math' instead of 'maths'?

HF: [Laughs] I used to mind, you know? In the U.K., whenever you hear an American say 'math' people always turn away and whisper the 's.' I used to get really annoyed about it. But then I saw a video by Numberphile, which is this math YouTube channel, and they explained the origins of why the U.K. call it 'maths' and the States call it 'math.' And after that, I didn't really mind it anymore. It turns out the U.K. is wrong!

PD: You now have a grand total of two TED Talks under your belt. How did you feel about the second one?

HF: It went better than the first, actually. I think that it was a better topic and I was better prepared. I was more experienced as well, which I think was important

PD: In your talk, you go over the mathematics of love and you bring in a lot of the work that you have done in a manner that engages the crowd. You brought up 'optimal stopping theory,' which is the theory that you don't settle for a partner until after a certain period of time has passed, and then once that period of time has passed you settle with the next best candidate who presents himself or herself. One question I have to ask: Did you follow that theory?

HF: [Laughs] Well I suppose I did subconsciously. I think that because I'm ginger — and in the U.K. people don't like ginger people very much — I think I automatically had people think I'm a massive minger. But yeah, subconsciously everyone does a little bit of optimal stopping theory. Everyone has a bit of time where they get to know what's available to them and what the market's like. I think that I — like everybody — sort of did that automatically.

PD: You talked a lot about online dating websites and the keys to successful online dating. Did you online date?

HF: I have online dated in the past. But, yeah, no. I didn't know about [the keys].

PD: Does 'optimal stopping theory' change if you're searching for a partner online or if it's in your everyday life?

HF: The two of them don't necessarily link in together. Let's say that you have a number of people who you can date over your lifetime. The optimal stopping theory is: Given that you have dated lots of people or you have the ability to date lots of people, how do you know when to stop? When I was talking about online dating, I just wanted to show the audience how to maximize their chances of getting a date.

PD: Tell me a little bit about what mathematics means to you.

HF: Oh it's everything! [Laughs] But if I'm honest, right, you know how poetry or music sometimes manages to communicate things that are not not possible through words? It sounds quite cheesy, but that's basically how I feel about mathematics. I think what when you play with an equation, you're kinda seeing into the structure of the universe, or the structure of the world that is not possible to describe in any other way. I think that when you've had that experience, or when you've had that kind of lightbulb moment where you're like 'this is the structure of the universe,' there's nothing that really compares to it.

I think that maths is really important. I think that lots of other subjects like physics and chemistry and engineering people have a natural appreciation for. But people don't have a natural appreciation for maths. I think that people at school had a really hard time with it and it's got a really bad reputation. People are willing to say 'oh, I'm bad at maths' in a way that they would never say 'oh, I'm bad at writing' or 'I'm bad at reading.' I think it's really important that people see how important and relevant maths is. But I want to take it away from just talking about the abstract. I think that maths communication should be about sharing how relevant it is in the real world.

Make It a Habit: Tips for Studying Math | <b>Tips Study Mathematics</b> Blog

If it seems like math tests these days are harder than they used to be, that's probably because they are. In a recent national survey, 86% of responding math teachers said they believe the newly adopted common core standards are more rigorous than prior standards.

But a more difficult curriculum doesn't need to spell disaster for all (or any) students. Actually, adjusting to the revised common core standards can be quite simple and painless when students practice a few good studying habits.

Slow and Steady
Math isn't like other subjects that can be easily learned through late-night cramming or memorized with mnemonic devices. For most students, mathematical operations are disorienting, cumbersome, and unintuitive, and that makes it hard to process and retain large bits of unfamiliar material at once.

In other words, students won't get the hang of trigonometry by speed-reading the three chapters they missed while on vacation, but it is possible to gain some traction by making a habit (rather than a special occasion) of studying and absorbing the material bit by bit.

So start early
Keep up with the homework and show up to class with questions about confusing parts of the chapter. That way, there will be no need to cover and catch up on large amounts of material at once, which can be challenging for anybody in the math world.

Find Time Every Day
Don't be intimidated by the idea of finding time each day to study. It doesn't have to be an all-night commitment. Instead, plan a half-hour before bed for practice problems or take advantage of downtime on the bus, between classes, or elsewhere to review notes and reread key sections from the textbook.

Do the Math

Mental math is fine for students who have already mastered the material, but working it out in your head is not an effective way for anyone to learn or review new material. Students–even good ones– who convince themselves they know the steps without ever performing them on paper often regret it on test day when they don't get the answer they'd expected or struggle to remember key steps and operations.

Working out the problems not only reinforces the rules and orders of operations in students' minds but also develops a sort of "muscle memory" for mathematical problem-solving. And that, in turn, reduces the chances of panicking or drawing a blank when tests and exams roll around.

Adjusting to the revised common core standards has potential to be a road bump for any student of math, but with a bit of effort, students who make habits of these studying tips will find they're quickly up to speed and comfortable with the new material.

PowerPoint Lecture Tips

Few people can use PowerPoint effectively, and professors are no exception.

I took a six-year break between the end of my undergrad and the start of my MBA program. To me, the biggest difference between lectures in 2004 and the present is that professors have become incredibly reliant on PowerPoint (even though many of them complain about computers).

However, I find very few people can use PowerPoint effectively, and professors are no exception.

The Wrong Way to Use PowerPoint

Some professors put far too much information on a slide, and then spent 10 minutes explaining the slide with a laser pointer (or at least, trying to explain it). Some professors put quotes on slides, and then they read those quotes aloud at half the pace it takes me to read it silently. The worst is when a math professor puts a problem on a slide and tells you (rather than shows you) how he arrived at the answer. I'm sorry, but math problems should be worked out on the board.

And of course, the lecture never progresses at the correct pace, and the professor just blasts through the last 10 slides in 3 minutes and says

"Don't worry, I'll post these online so you can go through them later."

The presentation is bad enough that I don't even bother attending lectures anymore. And this really hasn't been a problem for me.

Alternate Ways to Learn the Material

Skipping lectures hasn't been a problem for me, because I've found alternate ways to learn the material.

First of all, as much as I hate the way the professors present their slides, I have to admit that the PowerPoint document is usually the first place I go when it comes time to study.

All that information they pack onto the slides, though a detriment during presentation, is a goldmine during review.

In fact, I find this is the best place to get all of the material in one place, with the additional benefit of having been filtered for importance and relevance. Also, I like to put my material in outline form, and I'm able to copy from a PowerPoint and paste in Word or One Note with ease.

In addition to PowerPoint slides, about half of my professors are putting an mp3 version of their lecture online. I greatly prefer this to the real thing. First, the convenience is unbeatable. Second, I find that if the professor doesn't have a laser pointer to rely on, he has to be much clearer in his descriptions of concepts (no more "…and this leads to that…"). Finally, and most important to me, I can run through several lectures back to back.

Use Web Learning to Study Online or On-The-Go

I am very much a person that likes intense periods of learning, and a one-hour lecture twice a week just doesn't cut it. I spend the first few minutes of every lecture trying to remember what we went over last week. And how many times has the professor asked "Do you remember six weeks ago when we discussed X?" I remember going over X, but that's about all I could tell you about it.

With mp3 files, I'm able to study until I can't take it anymore. By way of example, I recently went on a road trip: 12 hours out and 12 hours back. I was able to cover an entire semesters worth of Economics in two days (though admittedly it also took a bit of coffee). This approach has the added benefit that I am able to recall most of Lecture 1 even during Lecture 20. For review purposes, if I ever do forget Lecture 1, it is only a few click away

Finally, if I ever run across a concept in the slides that I can't understand, I find the internet more helpful than the professor, even when it comes to explaining the concepts on the professor's own slides. If I ask a question during a lecture, all I can hope for is the best the professor could come up with on the spot.

The internet has everything. Wikipedia, of course, is a great place to start. But there are more specialized sites springing up all the time (e.g. Investopedia.com got me through Finance). I am able to copy the relevant text and paste it right in my outline. And the Internet's information tends to be more thorough and more succinct.

And if all else fails, I can always fall back on reading the textbook. I'm mean, the authors probably got it right by the 14th Edition, right?
